Frequently asked questions

General FAQs
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMY AND VIRGIN REMY HAIR?

"Remy" refers to the manner in which hair is collected from donors with the cuticles remaining in the same direction from root to tip. "Virgin" means that the hair has not been chemically processed, with cuticles fully intact. Not all virgin hair is Remy, and not all Remy is virgin. All of Hautelocks™ hair extensions are virgin Remy, making it the highest quality hair in the market.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THE CUTICLES ARE ALIGNED?

When the cuticles are aligned, the hair extensions flow in the same direction from root to tip making tangling far less likely.

WHAT IS A PIECE?

A piece is a single track of machine wefted the hair. A single piece of Hautelocks™ wefted hair is about 100 grams (+/- 5 grams) and is full and thick to the bottom.

HOW MANY PIECES DO I NEED FOR A FULL HEAD?

For a full head we generally recommend two pieces for lengths 12"-16", three pieces for lengths 18"-22", and four pieces for lengths 22" and longer. Our customers use between 2-6 pieces depending on the look they are trying to achieve. As a rule of thumb, remember that the longer the hair, the shorter the weft will be.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LACE AND SILK CLOSURE?

With both types of closures skill is needed to prep the pieces to emulate hair growing from the scalp once installed. Silk closures have a layer of silk as well as a layer of lace. Silk closures tend to be a little thicker than lace, but have a more realistic scalp-like appearance. Fabric dye is used to tint the silk to match the wearers skin tone. With lace closures, individual hairs are ventilated and knotted directly onto the lace. To give a lace closure the appearance of growing out of ones scalp, the knots will need to be lightened by one of many techniques, the lace tinted to match the skin tone, and often a fabric placed underneath to mimic a scalp. Lace closures are thinner, but some people do not prefer the lace grids that are noticeable up close. One closure isn’t better than the other, it is truly personal preference. Silk closures take more labor to create and are more expensive, but they are also more delicate. Lace closures have a longer lifespan, are flatter, but take more work to make look natural.  You should also seek your stylists recommendation to see which closure he/she is more familiar working with.

HOW DO I PREVENT MY CLOSURE FROM BALDING?

Balding is when your closure begins to have a spot where the hairs have come out of the base creating a balding appearance. This can be caused by, but not limited to, excessive tugging, brushing/combing, scratching with fingernails or foreign objects, applying product directly on the closure (including applying color), rough handling, or vigorous washing. Closures while mimicking a real scalp, they cannot be treated like a real scalp. You must handle with care. Each hair is individually ventilated into the base, knotted and secured with a strong adhesive. Based on the construction of a closure, you should comb/brush the hair from the ends, working your way up to the root while hold the hair at the root to prevent tension. Hair loss on closures is relatively easy because it is not wefted like extensions. Improper care of your closure will cause balding and unfortunately there is no way to fix this.

CAN YOUR CURLY HAIR BE WORN BONE STRAIGHT?

Our loose curl can be worn straight, however depending on your climate you may experience reversion/frizziness. We do not recommend straightening our soft curl, tight curl, or kinky curl, but some customers have been successful in doing so.  Each piece of hair varies in texture and strength, and can be very difficult to straighten, where other pieces may not.  If you intend to wear a curly texture straightened on a day to day basis please remember that just as natural hair will train itself straight over time, your extensions will do the same.  Also, it takes more time and heat to straighten curly hair versus wavy hair and could potentially cause dryness and damage over time, shortening the longevity of your extensions.  We recommend using a professional flat iron that reaches temperatures of 450º as well as a heat protectant. Simply wash/co-wash your hair to bring it back curly.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I USE TO TAKE CARE OF MY HAUTELOCKS HAIR EXTENSIONS™?

Hautelocks™ does not recommend a particular brand of shampoo or conditioner. For heavy build-up, a stronger clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo should be used. For light to moderate cleansing, use a moisturizing shampoo.  We deep condition our hair with heat using Silicon Mix by Avanti, but many moisturizing conditioners will perform just as well.  How often you should wash your hair depends on you and the amount of product you use on a daily basis. Clean hair will flow and bounce, where dirty hair will be heavy and often stick to itself. Unclean hair can also cause problems with the performance of your hair extensions, and can result in tangling and shedding. When using conditioners please be diligent in washing of all products before drying. An oil-free hair serum may be used for additional sheen, but please remember, a little goes a long way!

CAN I ORDER MY PIECES IN VARIOUS COLORS?

Our hair is not sold or shipped colored. In order to have the purest hair, we do not add any chemicals to the hair. The hair can be colored and we recommend that you work with a professional colorist experienced in processing virgin hair extensions to achieve your desired look. Much of the "virgin" hair on the market is processed and the cuticles are stripped making it a little easier to lift and color the hair.  Because Hautelocks™ hair is thick and the cuticles are 100% intact, it takes a skilled professional to safely process our hair extensions. Remember that although they may be knowledgable in hair color theory, not every hairstylist is a hair color specialist. Please take care in choosing an appropriate colorist to ensure that you protect your investment.
